In a CTV interview, Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, admitted the continues violation of national space by the Americans. On February 27, 2008, Defence Minister Peter MacKay disclosed that two CF-18 fighter jets met at least one Russian bomber within 24 hours of the U.S. President's trip to Ottawa on Feb. 19 just outside of Canada's Arctic airspace. The plane took off from the Russian military base in Engels (Saratovregion of the Russian Federation). The flight was undertaken according to the Russian MOD’sregular military training and air patrol plans in the Northern latitudes. All the international flights’ regulations were strictly respected. Therefore the verypossibility of a violation of Canadian airspace is out of question. The countries adjacent tothe flight path were notified in good time.
