SPOKESMAN OF THE RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENCE:
«RUSSIAN AIRCRAFTS DID NOT APPROACH CANADIAN AIRSPACE»

russia, west, ottawaThe official spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defence, colonel Alexander Drobyshevskiy, underlined that none of the Russian military planes did either enter or approach Canadianairspace.

The only flight, as colonel Drobyshevskiy mentined, which took place within thetimeframe indicated by Canadian Defence Minister Peter MacKay at his press-conference inOttawa earlier today, was the preplanned flight of the Russian long-range strategic aircrafton February 18, 2009. The plane took off from the Russian military base in Engels (Saratovregion of the Russian Federation). The flight was undertaken according to the Russian MOD’sregular military training and air patrol plans in the Northern latitudes.

All the international flights’ regulations were strictly respected. Therefore the verypossibility of a violation of Canadian airspace is out of question. The countries adjacent tothe flight path were notified in good time.
